SLA Inc., DBA Sustainable Labor Alliance, is a nonprofit social enterprise based in Southeast Los Angeles. We focus on transforming communities through green schoolyard projects, tree planting, and workforce development programs.

Our work is supported through public and private funding, including green schoolyard grants, urban forestry/tree planting grants, and workforce development grants. Through these efforts, we design, build, and maintain green spaces while creating job opportunities for local residents.

We hold various events, campaigns and raise funds for the implementation of projects to preserve the environment.

What We Do

Green Schoolyard Projects (Grant-Funded)

We design and build green schoolyards using grant funding. These projects include tree planting, shade structures, nature-based play areas, and landscape improvements that support student health and learning.

● Access to green schoolyard grant funding
● Cooler, safer, and more engaging school environments
● Hands-on environmental education opportunities
● Full project delivery, including design, construction, and reporting

Tree Planting & Urban Forestry (Grant-Funded)

We implement tree planting projects funded through urban forestry grants. This includes
planning, planting, and maintaining trees in schools, parks, and public spaces.

● Increased shade and reduced urban heat
● Improved air quality and environmental health
● Compliance with tree planting and urban forestry grant requirements
● Community planting events and engagement

Workforce Development Programs (Grant-Funded)

We operate paid pre-apprenticeship programs funded through workforce development grants.
Participants receive hands-on training in landscaping, irrigation, construction, and urban forestry.

● Industry certifications (OSHA, irrigation, etc.)
● Direct pathways into union apprenticeships

Landscape Construction (Community Projects)

We build parks, schoolyards, and community spaces through a combination of grant funding
and contracted work. Services include planting, irrigation, grading, and site improvements.

Landscape Maintenance & Stewardship

We provide ongoing maintenance for green spaces, including those developed through grants. This ensures long-term success and sustainability of each project.

● Ensures compliance with maintenance requirements tied to grants

Community Engagement & Environmental Education

We lead workshops, community meetings, and school-based education tied to our projects. This includes teaching students and residents about tree care, sustainability, and environmental
stewardship.
